The fascinating truth behind the myth of Shangri-la

In her enlightening and well researched work “Shambhala” (1996, Quest Books), Victoria LePage poses the intriguing question: “Are there superior godlike beings invisibly over seeing and influencing our life on earth?” She goes on to say: “since the late nineteenth century esoteric writers have joined with students of mythology in suggesting that the gods of antiquity were really spiritual adepts of unusually high stature. The most important contribution of these writers has been to introduce into the modern world the concept of initiation and transformation, of personal transcendence, and the corollary of a graduated ascent to adepthood, leading on to the further idea of an initiate Hierarchy that guides human evolution.”

The author identifies this supreme initiate Hierarchy with the mystical Shambhala which lies at the core of the eastern esoteric tradition of central Asia. This mythic tradition claims Shambhala to be the central abode and directional axis of the higher adepti and spiritual masters who oversee the evolution of humanity on planet earth. LePage comments: “I believe the idea of Shambhala has not yet come to full flower, but that when it does it will have enormous power to reshape civilization. It is the sign of the future. The search for a new unifying principle that our civilization must now undertake will, I am convinced, lead it to this source of higher energies, and Shambhala will become the great icon of the new millennium.”

Is humanity ready to undertake this step into an advanced expansion of consciousness embracing a unitive vision of human and planetary wholeness? The author clearly believes this is realistically possible and presumably the guiding Higher Spiritual Directorate is working in accordance with such a notion and belief.

Victoria LePage observes: “The hidden kingdom was not always concealed from view and will not always be so in the future. As the world evolves so will the sacred center rise into visibility, and in the more enlightened epoch to come, will become open and light-filled and will be laid out on different iconographic principles….From it spiritual teachers will emerge, and its creative energies will pour forth into the world to incubate new religions, new social and political systems and new modes of knowledge out of its inexhaustible plenum, and will ensure the safe passage of the initiatory tradition from the old cycle to the new….Those who live in Shambhala’s transcendental inner zone are its engine, its powerhouse; their consciousness turns the wheel. They are the supreme authority for this planet, forming the governing core of Shambhala and, through the ashrams and monasteries of the outer region, of the world.”

She further informs us: “Time and the corrupting hand of legend have blurred and confused the accounts of these superhuman adepts that the Mystery traditions have passed down to us, but the knowledge is never lost. It can be recovered and reinterpreted in contemporary terms again and again. It tells us that the initiate Hierarchy to which these beings belong is the central axis or merudanda of the whole human race, collectively performing the hidden evolutionary function of the chakric system in individuals. It is also in its formation and function an exact reflection of the World Axis; and both axes, the racial and the planetary coincide in Shambhala. Thus Shambhala, the World Axis and the Hierarchy are in principle synonymous. This is why we find at the heart of all our mythologies the same archetypal complex of ideas, involving an assembly of wise beings who meet in judgment on the fields of Heaven, and always at the foot of a World Mountain, a World Tree or a World Pillar of Truth.”

Victoria LePage also insightfully relates: “It is said that a record of the earth's geological history is stored in Shambhala’s archives and details the great movements of human-planetary evolution whereby Gaia maintains herself. In this way the Directorate monitors life on earth, anticipates its future development, and plans such action as will cooperate with the greater whole….although a few intellectuals knew better, medieval European man in the mass was imprisoned by his conception of a flat earth, a conception who se inadequacy exactly mirrored the social and religious squalor in which he lived; and nothing but its destruction and reconstitution in a more enlightened geography released him into a relatively wholesome existence. Moreover, the further adoption of a heliocentric cosmography released him still more. In the same way we ourselves are imprisoned by the inadequate picture of the world on which our contemporary culture is based, and can only be freed from it by the same kind of conceptual revolution that ended the Middle Ages.

“As long as the planet is conceived of as a purely physical unsouled body, albeit a spherical one, meaninglessly rotating in an unconscious, loveless physical universe; as long as we have no coherent theory of a current of compassionate and intelligent life-energy at the heart of everything that exists—the earth and the universe no less than ourselves—it seems likely that we are consigning ourselves to death and the earth to continuing degradation. Unless the whole cosmic configuration that provides our cultural background is reconstituted so as to accommodate a crucial new factor—that is, the axial reality of unitive energy; and not as a mere abstraction, but as a viable structural component of the geography of our world—we will be unable to cross the next threshold in our evolutionary journey. As long as we cannot recognize Gaia as a spiritual being we cannot recognize our own spirituality, for we are bound together. If we rejectthe ecological reforms demanded by the unitive vision we will fail to realize our own human potential.”

There can be no doubt that the author’s penetrating observations, which reveal the greater world view incorporating the presence and overriding modus operandi of a beneficial Shambhalic spiritual directorate, are very pertinent at this critical juncture in the course of human affairs. As such her book is essential reading material for anyone who is seeking a greater understanding of the unfolding divine programme transforming human and planetary consciousness into a higher octave of spiritual evolution.
